Case Study #109: Rolls of Banding

Problem: End-effector must handle large variations in roll diameters. The roll cannot withstand excessive grip force. The unit would need to handle over 5,000 in-lbs of off-center moment loading.

Application: Picking up the outside of rolls from a mandrel and transferring them to a pallet. Rolls are positioned with the core horiztonal and pitched 90° for vertical core positioning.

Solution: Vertical Lift Cylinder and three prong O.D. Gripper end-effector with adjustable jaw arms for various O.D.’s. Horizontal axis bearings and universal tool flange mounting plate on pitching end joint for future end-effector retrofit.
