Operators were using a chain and hoist solution to transfer parts. It was deemed an unsafe environment with several dropped parts. Accurate placement in workstation positioners and pallets could not be achieved. Operators were not meeting cycle times with prior handling method.

There were a wide variety of panel sizes, weights and configurations. Panel variations include flat sheets that could only be p-icked up with a vacuum end-effector and panels with large round holes that could only be picked up with a gripper end-effector.

The cylinders weigh between 50 to 100 lbs., 8″ – 10″ diameter and 48″ – 52″ long. 120″ of radial reach is required for three pick up and place points. The cylinders are up to 350° in temperature when the are brought to the work cell. Plant safety procedures require maintenance personnel must be able to service the electrical and hydraulic components from floor level.

The spools have an inner and outer wall between them, which an end-effector could be inserted. However, the opening between the spool walls is curved and has spokes that create four quadrants and only a 3/4″ height into which an end-effector can be inserted. In addition to supporting the weight of the spool, the end-effector must slider the spool off the spindle.

Limited work space, multiple obstacles, and heavy parts lead to ergonomic problems. Restricted power sources and underground environmental conditions limited the available equipment to perform the tasks. The end-user was looking for a solution to improve operator ergonomics as well as the overall efficiency of this maintenance process.
